Description
This classic Old-Fashioned Fudge is the kind of dessert that never goes out of style. Rich, deeply chocolatey, and irresistibly creamy, it melts in your mouth with every bite. Made using traditional stovetop techniques, this fudge delivers a smooth texture and bold cocoa flavor that modern shortcuts simply can’t match. It’s perfect for holidays, gifting, or anytime you’re craving a truly nostalgic sweet treat.
Ingredients
2 cups granulated sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup whole milk
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
A pinch of salt
Method of Preparation
In a heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and milk. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and no dry spots remain.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly to prevent sticking or burning.
Once boiling, reduce stirring and allow the mixture to cook until it reaches the soft-ball stage (about 234–238°F / 112–114°C on a candy thermometer). This usually takes 10–15 minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat and add the butter and vanilla extract. Do not stir yet. Let the mixture cool undisturbed for about 10 minutes.
Using a wooden spoon, beat the fudge vigorously until it thickens, loses its glossy shine, and becomes creamy.
Pour the fudge into a buttered or parchment-lined square pan and smooth the top evenly.
Allow it to set at room temperature until firm, then cut into squares and serve.
Tip: Beating is the secret step—this is what gives old-fashioned fudge its signature creamy texture!
