Orange Upside-Down Cake Recipe


Orange Topping

  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar (or white sugar)
  • 2–3 medium oranges, thinly sliced (seeds removed)

Method

  1. Melt butter and pour into the pan.
  2. Sprinkle sugar evenly over butter.
  3. Arrange orange slices neatly on top.
  4. Set aside.

Cake Batter

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup butter (soft) or ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 170°C (340°F).
  2. Cream butter and sugar until light (or whisk oil + sugar well).
  3. Add eggs one at a time, mix well.
  4. Add orange juice, zest, and vanilla.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix dry ingredients.
  6. Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients gently.
  7. Pour batter over the arranged oranges.
  8. Smooth the top.
  9. Bake 40–45 minutes until a skewer comes out clean.
  10. Cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a plate while still warm.
