A classic, creamy, and cheesy side dish that’s perfect for holidays, family dinners, or any cozy meal! Tender potato slices baked in a rich cheese sauce—pure comfort food.
Ingredients:
4 large potatoes (about 2 lbs), peeled and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups milk (warm)
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and mozzarella)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional, for color)
Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
Prepare the cheese sauce:
In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Slowly whisk in the warm milk and cream until smooth and thickened.
Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Remove from heat and stir in 1½ cups of cheese until melted and smooth.
Assemble the dish:
Layer half of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish.
Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
Add the remaining potato slices and pour the rest of the sauce on top.
Top with cheese:
Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheese evenly over the top.
Optionally, sprinkle paprika for a golden color.
Bake:
Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for another 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown.
Serve:
Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Garnish with chopped parsley or chives for a fresh touch.
💡 Tips:
Use a mandoline slicer for even, thin potato slices.
Add cooked bacon bits or caramelized onions for extra flavor.
Try different cheeses like Gruyère, Swiss, or Monterey Jack.
