BBQ Hot Dog & Bean Skillet

A smoky, sweet, and savory twist on a classic comfort food — minus the carbs!

  • Have you ever craved baked beans and hot dogs but skipped them because of all the sugar and carbs?
  • What if you could enjoy that same rich BBQ flavor — completely keto-friendly?
  • Would you prefer it as a quick dinner or a cozy weekend meal?

This Keto BBQ Hot Dog & Bean Skillet brings all the nostalgia of traditional BBQ beans with a healthier twist. It uses black soybeans (a low-carb alternative to regular beans) and sugar-free BBQ ingredients, making it flavorful, filling, and fully keto-approved.

Ingredients

For the Hot Dogs & Sauce

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 4–5 keto-friendly hot dogs (sliced into rounds)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • ½ cup sugar-free ketchup (such as Primal Kitchen or G Hughes)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp erythritol or monk fruit sweetener (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp chili powder (optional for spice)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt (to taste)
  • 1 can (about 15 oz) black soybeans, drained and rinsed

Optional Toppings

  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream or keto ranch
  • Chopped green onions or parsley

Instructions

1. Cook the Hot Dogs

In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
Add the sliced hot dogs and cook for about 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they’re browned and crisp on the edges.
Remove from the pan and set aside.

2. Sauté the Aromatics

In the same skillet, add olive oil, then toss in onion and garlic.
Sauté for 3–4 minutes, until translucent and fragrant — this builds the base flavor of your sauce.

3. Make the Sauce

Add ketchup, tomato paste, vinegar, mustard, sweetener, and seasonings (paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper).
Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 2–3 minutes, until it slightly thickens and becomes glossy.

4. Combine Everything

Add the black soybeans and the browned hot dogs back into the pan.
Mix well to coat everything evenly in the sauce.
Reduce heat and let it simmer for 5–10 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld together beautifully.

5. Serve & Enjoy

Spoon into warm bowls and top with shredded cheese or a dollop of sour cream.
Enjoy as a hearty meal on its own or serve with cauliflower rice or a low-carb biscuit on the side!

Chef’s Tips

  • Use sugar-free BBQ sauce instead of ketchup for a smokier flavor.
  • Swap black soybeans for chopped mushrooms or zucchini if you want to make it bean-free.
  • This dish keeps well in the fridge for up to 4 days — the flavor deepens as it sits!
