This classic homestyle dish is simple, filling, and perfect for family dinners. It’s pure comfort food — warm, savory, and satisfying in every bite.
Ingredients
1 ½ lbs (700g) ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried parsley
2 cups thinly sliced potatoes (or 3 cups diced potatoes)
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish lightly with oil or butter.
Prepare the beef mixture:
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley. Combine well and shape into thick oval patties.
Brown the patties:
Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly brown the patties on both sides (about 2–3 minutes per side). They don’t need to cook through.
Prepare the sauce:
In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, milk, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
Assemble the casserole:
Arrange sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish. Place the browned hamburger steaks on top. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over everything.
Bake:
Cover with foil and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.
Add cheese (optional):
Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for another 10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
Serve:
Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
Serving Suggestion
Serve with steamed green beans, a fresh salad, or warm homemade bread for a complete meal.
Enjoy your homemade Amish-style comfort dinner!
