While the dough needs time to rise, the steps are simple and the final result is absolutely worth it.
Ingredients
For the Dough
1 cup (240 ml) warm whole milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
1 large egg, at room temperature
¼ cup (57 g) unsalted butter, softened
1½ teaspoons salt
For the Cheese Filling
1½ cups (150 g) shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese
1 cup (100 g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
½ cup (50 g) freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture becomes foamy. This step ensures the yeast is active. - Make the Dough
Add the egg, softened butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. - First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size. - Prepare the Cheese Filling
In a medium bowl, mix the mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan cheeses until well combined. Set aside. - Shape the Rolls
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions (about 12–16 pieces). Flatten each piece slightly, place a spoonful of the cheese mixture in the center, then pinch the edges tightly to seal and form a smooth ball. - Second Rise
Place the stuffed dough balls seam-side down in a greased baking dish. Cover and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes, until puffy. - Bake
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 18–22 minutes, or until golden brown on top. - Serve
Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter if desired. Serve warm and enjoy the cheesy, melty center.
Serving Tip
These rolls pair beautifully with tomato soup, roasted meats, or as a standalone snack.
They’re best enjoyed fresh while the cheese is still warm and stretchy.
