A Stuffing That Pairs Perfectly With Ham

This savory-sweet stuffing is the perfect companion to baked or glazed ham. With buttery toasted bread, caramelized onions, fragrant herbs, and a touch of apple sweetness, it balances the rich, salty flavor of ham beautifully. Moist on the inside with a lightly crisp top, this classic side dish is ideal for holidays, Sunday dinners, or any special gathering where comfort food shines.

Ingredients
6 cups day-old bread, cubed
4 tablespoons butter
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 celery stalks, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 apple, peeled and diced (optional but recommended)
1 teaspoon dried sage
1 teaspoon dried thyme
½ teaspoon black pepper
Salt, to taste
2–2½ cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 large egg, lightly beaten (optional, for a firmer texture)
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Preparation Method
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.

Spread the bread cubes on a baking tray and toast in the oven for 8–10 minutes until lightly golden.

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and sauté until soft and fragrant.

Stir in the garlic and diced apple, cooking for another 2 minutes.

Add sage, thyme, pepper, and salt, mixing well.
In a large bowl, combine the toasted bread with the sautéed mixture. Gradually pour in the broth until the stuffing is moist but not soggy.

If using, gently mix in the beaten egg.

Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake an additional 10–15

minutes until the top is lightly crispy.
Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm alongside ham.

Serving Tip
This stuffing pairs especially well with honey-glazed or brown sugar ham, and leftovers taste even better the next day.
