Homemade Cherry Turnovers Recipe

  • Do you prefer fresh cherries or canned cherry filling in your pastries?
  • Have you ever made turnovers from scratch, or do you usually buy them from a bakery?
  • What’s your favorite glaze flavor — classic vanilla, almond, or lemon?
  • Do you enjoy them warm with ice cream, or room temperature with coffee?
  • Would you try making other fruit versions like apple, blueberry, or peach turnovers?

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry (2 sheets, thawed)
  • 1 cup fresh or canned cherry pie filling
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions (Step-by-Step)

1️⃣ Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2️⃣ Prepare the puff pastry:

  • Remove from the freezer and thaw according to package directions (usually about 30–40 minutes at room temperature).
  • Once pliable, lightly flour your surface and roll each sheet into a slightly larger rectangle to even out the folds.

3️⃣ Cut & fill:

  • Slice each pastry sheet into 4 equal squares.
  • Spoon 1–2 tablespoons of cherry filling into the center of each square — don’t overfill or the turnovers may burst open while baking.

4️⃣ Shape the turnovers:

  • Fold each square diagonally to form a triangle.
  • Press the edges with your fingers, then use a fork to crimp and seal tightly.
  • To help prevent leaks, you can brush a tiny bit of water or egg wash along the edges before sealing.

5️⃣ Egg wash:

  • In a small bowl, beat 1 egg with 1 tablespoon milk.
  • Brush this mixture gently over the tops of the turnovers to create that shiny golden crust.

6️⃣ Bake:

  • Arrange turnovers on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each.
  • Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until puffed and deep golden brown.
  • Tip: halfway through, rotate the baking sheet for even browning.

7️⃣ Prepare the glaze:

  • While the turnovers cool slightly, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 2–3 tablespoons milk until smooth and pourable.
  • Add milk gradually — you want a glaze that drizzles easily but isn’t too thin.

8️⃣ Drizzle & serve:

  • Once the turnovers have cooled for 5–10 minutes, drizzle the glaze generously over the top.
  • Let it set for a few minutes before serving.

9️⃣ Enjoy:

  • Serve warm or at room temperature — perfect with coffee, tea, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

ENJOY
